Stitchbird or Hihi as it is known in Maori, means Ray of Sunshine.
The English name, Stitchbird, describes the birds' short clicking call, which sounds like machine stitching. The Stitchbird is one of New Zealand's rarest birds and small managed populations are now established to improve their chances of long term survival.

Artist Bio
Jo Gallagher lives in the small King Country settlement of Piopio, New Zealand. Although working primarily as a contemporary realist Jo recently begun to add another layer of interest into her compositions – that of humour! Using native birds and animals as both object and subject enables her to voice her interest in the idiosyncratic and distinctive world we live in.
Jo is represented by a few selected galleries throughout New Zealand.
